Mug Hug- Free Crochet Pattern

A Mug Hug is a wonderful accessory to any mug. This design uses two loops to wrap around the handles of a mug so it will not work for every type of handle! If the either end of the handle dramatically swoops in, the yarn will most likely not hold in place. I use my mug hugs to slightly protect my hands from the scalding heat from a fresh cup of tea.

This pattern is beginner friendly and in US terms! To follow along you will need a size 4 yarn, a size 5.5mm hook, scissors, and a tapestry needle. If you don’t have a tapestry needle you can weave in the ends with the hook, but it is more difficult than using a needle!

Materials

Size 4 Yarn (Worsted)

Size 5.5mm (size I) hook

Scissors

Tapestry needle

Stitches and Abbreviations

CH- chain

SC- Single Crochet

Pattern Notes

  • Chain one at the end of the row does not count as a stitch.

  • After the first two rows, all of the single crochets are worked into the single crochets of the previous row.

  • If your mug is wider, it is very easy to add additional rows until the pattern fits!

  • Since this project has a lot of holes, weaving the ends can be a bit harder. I would go up and down the flat edge instead of near the handle-loop. Weaving the end in one direction makes it easier for the end to come out, so going back after a few stitches, kind of like back stitching in sewing, helps keep that string hidden away.

The Pattern

Foundation: CH17

Row 1: In second Ch from the hook, SC. SC in next stitch, CH10, and SC in each of the last two CHs of the foundation. CH 1, turn the project.

Row 2: SC in the first stitch. *CH 2, skip two stitches, and SC.* Repeat from * to * until the end of the row. There should be 5 SC. CH 1, turn the project.

Row 3-32: Repeat Row 2. Depending on the mug size, you may need more rows.

Row 33: SC in each of the first two stitches, Ch 12, 2 SC in each of the last two stitches of Row 32.

Fasten off.

To Fasten off, cut your yarn free leaving a 3-4in tail. This helps ensure your project won't unravel. Then, you can pull the whole string through the loop on your hook to tie it off!
